“Nunca había comenzado una vuelta así en mi vida”. These are the words of Carla Bernat (-2) after carding a four-under-par round in the second round of the Amundi German Masters, bouncing back after a dull opening day.
The ANWA champion dubbed the players of her generation as fighters. The truth is that the feelings after handing in a card of 75 strokes were not the best, but she doesn’t give in, she fights.
Bernat’s start at the Green Eagle course was incredible. Four consecutive birdies marked the best start to a round that the player from Castellón can remember: “It was amazing”. In less than an hour, the still amateur had turned the leaderboard upside down. From fighting to make the cut to looking upwards on the leaderboard. The irons played a big part, as did the putter. The reality is that in that stretch, the maximum distance for birdie was five metres.
Unfortunately, just at the fifth hole, the rain appeared and slowed the round. From that moment until the penultimate flag, the rain didn’t stop. Just as she left the green of the 4th hole, the 13th at Green Eagle, she finished her round. Only one more birdie and a single bogey in her round. The battle against the rain ended in a draw in that stretch, she knows how to fight there too. Another key to the day was undoubtedly the par fives. On Thursday, she was +2, and this Friday, -1, a three-stroke difference. A total of 69 strokes, nearly breaking into the top twenty on the leaderboard.
“I could have made a few less strokes, but also a few more, so I’m happy with how the day went,” said the player from Castellón. However, don’t think her comeback intentions end here. Carla is six strokes behind the leaders Ellinor Sudow (-8) and Helen Briem (-8) and is looking for a fight on moving day: “I’m going for one of those I call ‘monster rounds'”, which is one of those days when you play under par and keep climbing positions. Carla hasn’t come to Germany for a stroll; she’s hungry for more. She’s on the hunt for a monster round, precisely on the course also nicknamed ‘Green Monster’.
Just one stroke behind her, silent and without making noise, is Luna Sobrón, who on Friday matched the course to make her eighth consecutive cut and aims to keep adding. Two rounds that don’t stand out at first glance, but allow her to approach the weekend well-positioned.
Marta Sanz (+1), the best Spaniard on Thursday, struggled a bit more and with a round of 76 strokes closes the first two days at +1, but with another 36 holes ahead to surpass her best result of the season (35th place in Morocco). Also in for the weekend are Nuria Iturrioz (+2) and Blanca Fernández (+3). The Madrid player has bounced back from a dull start of 78 strokes to grant herself two more days of golf.
Those who bid farewell earlier than desired were Amaia Latorre (+5), María Hernández (+5), Harang Lee (+7), and Clara Moyano (+12).
