Hannah Green (-16) claimed victory this Sunday at the Australian WPGA Championship. She was the clear favourite and confirmed it with relative comfort. They could almost have handed her the trophy on Thursday, when the tournament began and she was already up near the top. But that does not mean it was easy, quite the opposite. It is true that the Australian is currently playing in a different league to the Ladies European Tour, not least because she is among the best in the world, but you still have to get out on the course, prove it and finish the job. Green did so with authority.
The 29-year-old and 2019 major winner prevailed by four shots after carding a 69 on Sunday. She finished ahead of the German Alexandra Forsterling (-12) and the South African Casandra Alexander (-12). Neither could keep pace with her when the tournament was being decided. Meghan MacLaren (-10) took fourth and completed the list of those who reached double figures in the event.
What Green has achieved is a feat. It is, after all, her third victory in three starts. Three consecutive. Three from three. It is true they were not consecutive weeks, as she had some rest between them, but that does not detract from the merit. She first won the World Ladies Championship in Singapore, an event on the LPGA Tour, then rested and has now won two successive events in Australia — her national open, which had not been held at home since 2014, and the WPGA Championship. In other words, the two most important tournaments contested in Australia. Simply majestic.
Needless to say, she is one of the most in-form players in the world right now, if not the most. She is again approaching the world top 10 and becomes a favourite for the majors season just around the corner. It is not the first time she has won three tournaments in a year. She did so in 2017 (five victories between Australia and the Symetra) and in 2024 (the three on the LPGA Tour). That said, it is the first time she has done it so early. The season has only just begun, so one of the main attractions now will be to see where her tally ends up.
As for the Spanish players, Luna Sobrón (-2) finished in 24th place. She was the best of the Spanish contingent with a final round of 72, with two birdies and three bogeys. Meanwhile, Harang Lee (+1) finished 36th, with 73 today, Blanca Fernández (+2) was 41st, posting the best Spanish round on Sunday with a 71 and, finally, Amaia Latorre (+4) finished 48th with the same score today as Blanca
