This Friday marked the start of the Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas, the Aramco Houston Championship, a Ladies European Tour tournament divided into two competitions: the first, a team event, with four players in each team competing over 36 holes; the second, an individual event, with players battling for the title on Sunday over the final 18 holes, taking into account the results each has achieved in the first two rounds.
With the final Sunday showdown in mind, two of the Spanish players present at the event have started to position themselves. Luna Sobrón (-4) and Nuria Iturrioz (-4) have placed themselves high on the leaderboard, only behind the English player Mimi Rhodes (-6), who leads alone with a two-shot advantage.
With scorecards of 68 strokes each, Luna and Nuria share the second position on the leaderboard with Ashley Lau (-4) and Ane Van Dam (-4). Up to 13 players are within a margin of just three strokes, after a great day of golf where the focus was mainly on the team competition, the first to be resolved over the weekend.

Carlota Ciganda (-2), with a good round of 70 strokes, was the third Spanish player to play under par on this first day of competition in Texas. Meanwhile, María Hernández (+1), Marta Sanz (+1), Blanca Fernández (+2), and Teresa Toscano (+7) couldn’t beat the course, although almost all of them, except for Teresa, still have time to fight for a good result in a very tight leaderboard.
In the team event, the team captained by Celine Boutier and featuring Luna Sobrón, with a total of 18 under par, was the best with a two-shot margin over Shannon Tan’s team and three over Van Dam’s team. Carlota’s team finished far behind, 10 strokes back. The team standings take into account the results of the four players in each team, so the distances are not particularly representative, and the title will be contested tomorrow, before the tournament becomes solely individual.
