Bryson DeChambeau has done it again. This week he has posted a video that has gone viral, especially in the United States, in which he played a round of golf with Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States. A few hours after stirring up the networks, DeChambeau has assured that he would love to have the opportunity to play 18 holes with the other presidential candidate, the Democrat Kamala Harris. Her candidacy is not yet official, but it is taken for granted after the withdrawal of Joe Biden.
The US Open champion’s round with Trump has achieved more than six million views in less than 48 hours. It has been the most viewed video on YouTube and has gained over 300,000 new subscribers to his channel. Before this week’s LIV at the JCB Golf & Country Club in Staffordshire, DeChambeau was questioned about the video.
“First of all, it’s an honour to play with someone of that kind of influence, whatever their political side. It was about offering unique and different content on YouTube. We wanted to show the golfing skills of any influential person and he was definitely on a list that I wanted to show. We called him, we asked him to play and he said yes. Obviously, he is a figure that attracts many looks and we thought it would be great to show his profile as a golfer. He’s quite good,” he says.
DeChambeau explains how the making off was. “It was a lot of fun, it took us a bit, but we approved it. It was done in three days. I think it was July 6th, Saturday, a few weeks before everything (the shots during a Trump rally) happened. It was a great time. We had a great time and, again, I’m looking forward to doing many more of those with other influential people,” he points out.
One of those people could be, according to DeChambeau, Kamala Harris, former US President Barack Obama or “any other person from that side. I am more than willing to play with them. I have no problem. The thing about golf is that the more we can use it to bring everyone together in a cool way, the better. For me, it is very important to inspire new generations and that is why I think this YouTube space is so interesting, because it shows the true face of each one. That’s what I’m trying to achieve and it has definitely helped me in that sense and I’m looking forward to doing it with more people.”
About the moment of making the video, DeChambeau never had doubts. “Politicians are figures that divide, no doubt, I respect and understand it, but I think that creating content was the most important thing we were trying to achieve there and raise a lot of money for charities. In those two things combined is what we focused on, trying to put politics aside and just create fun and amazing content so that people could see cool, fun and entertaining pictures.”
However, as much as he enjoyed his round with Trump, DeChambeau insists that he has no political aspirations of his own. “You never know the position of things and they can change along the way, but for me, probably not. I don’t think so. I’m going to play golf for the rest of my life. I’ll stick to golf.”
