Graeme McDowell, champion of the US Open in 2010 and currently playing in the LIV Golf, has been sanctioned by the Saudi circuit after testing positive in an anti-doping control.
The one from Northern Ireland was subjected to a control in the past tournament held in Nashville and the result detected the presence of prohibited substances. The player has argued that he had a cold and that, by mistake, he used a decongestant that is not allowed.
Macdowell already knows the punishment for his positive: a tournament suspension, a fine of 125,000 dollars, as well as the return of the prize money from the aforementioned Nashville tournament in which he finished in 42nd place and pocketed 127,000 dollars.
The golfer has acknowledged his mistake and has left the following message on his social networks. He has not missed the opportunity to throw a dart at ‘other circuits’: “Before the LIV tournament in Nashville, I had severe congestion that was affecting my sleep. In an effort to control it, I used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant without realizing that it could be on the list of prohibited substances. As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of reviewing all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, I didn’t think to do so due to the over-the-counter nature of this medication, and I deeply regret not doing so. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.
LIV’s anti-doping policy is designed to be comprehensive and transparent. Unlike other circuits, LIV applies these rules rigorously, which made this situation particularly challenging for me. However, I respect the need for these rules and sanctions, as they are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport.
I am proud of my 22-year career and how I have behaved throughout it. Now, I am focused on moving forward and returning to the golf course. I look forward to seeing everyone in LIV Chicago!” concluded the player born in Portrush.
