Jon Rahm, on top again in LIV Golf. As always. At the very top. The world No. 1 has taken a solo lead in Mexico City, at the Club de Golf Chapultepec, after the second round and heads into the weekend with everything in his favour to fight for his second win of the year.
Rahm carded a 67 (-4), which combined with his 65 on Thursday leaves him with -10 overall, one ahead of a chasing trio made up of Matthew Wolff, Tom McKibbin and Harold Varner III.
It wasn’t, though, an easy day.
“It has been a somewhat frustrating day,” Rahm admitted. “There were very well struck shots that ended up very far away. Between the wind and the altitude things happen.” And yet, still the leader. Again.
The man from Barrika continues to show that trademark ability to compete even when he is not comfortable, accumulating opportunities and holding the score. It is no coincidence: this is already the 16th time he has led or shared the lead in LIV since 2024. Y he sends a warning to the rest: “I’m playing well enough. I just have to make more of the opportunities”.
Legion XIII dominates: historic lead
Rahm’s dominance is not an isolated case. His team, Legion XIII, is putting on a genuine exhibition. With -25 overall, they lead by 19 shots over Fireballs GC, the largest margin ever recorded at this stage in LIV Golf. An astounding figure.
Rahm is well supported:
- Tom McKibbin (-9, T2)
- Tyrrell Hatton (-7, T6)
The team is flying and look set for a routine win on Sunday… although Rahm prefers not to get complacent: “It would be incredible to win by 20 or 30 shots, but other teams are going to come strong. We have to keep playing well”.
Masaveu joins the fight and leads the Spanish players
The other big Spanish story comes courtesy of Luis Masaveu. The young Madrid native is enjoying his best week in LIV Golf and sits in sole fifth place (-8) after posting another 65. He is only two off the lead. “I’m playing very solidly. I’ve managed to miss in the right places and keep my composure,” he explained. A huge leap in his progression. His best result so far in LIV was a T14. This weekend could be a magnificent step forward.
Fireballs hold on… but remain far behind
The Spanish side Fireballs GC sit second (-6), although at a vast distance from Legion XIII.
- David Puig (-3 overall)
- Josele Ballester (-4 in the second round, with a 403-yard drive)
- Sergio García (+5 overall)
The captain isn’t having his week and the team are feeling it, though they remain well placed for the podium.
The course bites… and the altitude rules
The Club de Golf Chapultepec continues to take centre stage. Altitude, narrow fairways and treacherous greens are defining the week:
- Drives of more than 400 yards (up to 411 from Bryson DeChambeau)
- 1,737 putts in the round (LIV record)
- Average of 1.69 putts per hole
A cocktail that demands precision and patience.
