The team of Jon Rahm at LIV Golf already has a name assigned. Although it has not yet been officially announced, from Ten Golf we can confirm that it will be called Legion XIII, in reference to one of the most famous military formations of the Roman Empire, created in the year 57 BC by Julius Caesar.
The idea for the name came from the marketing and advertising team at LIV Golf. The aim is to link it with Europe, hence the reference to the Roman Empire, and to the number thirteen, as Rahm’s team will be the thirteenth in the history of LIV Golf. The Twitter account of LIV Golf Updates was the first to publish that Legion XIII could be the name of the new team.
The Legion XIII was the most prominent military body of the Roman Empire. It was decisive in Julius Caesar’s victory in the Gallic War and accompanied the most famous emperor in history on his legendary crossing of the Rubicon, the natural border between Gaul and Rome. It was there, precisely, when Julius Caesar uttered the famous phrase: “alea iacta est”. Which means the die is cast. That was an act of rebellion. He had been denied the second consulate in Gaul and launched the invasion of Rome through the Rubicon.
After the military campaign in North Africa, in 45 BC, Julius Caesar decided to demobilise this military body with honours, offering the legionaries farming land to start a new life. Many of them ended up living in the territory that Spain occupies today.
Another factor that has helped in the assignment of this name is that the symbol of this Legion XIII was the lion, as can be seen in the image accompanying this information. There is not much to explain, if we take into account Rahm’s fondness for Athletic Bilbao, the lions, and that he himself is known in Spain as the Lion of Barrika.
Rahm’s team already has a name, what remains to be known is which players will accompany him. According to what was also published today on social networks, one of the members will be Jinichiro Kozuma, a Japanese golfer who obtained his LIV Golf rights through the school, which shows that Jon’s room for manoeuvre to build his own team is quite limited and that they have not been able to convince the best golfers that the Basque put on the table. At least, not all of them, we will see what happens with Tyrrell Hatton and Wyndham Clark.
In the next few hours, the team’s name should be officially announced, as well as some of its members.
