The team final of LIV Golf will not be played. At least that is what the organisation has reportedly already communicated to its own players, according to a report published this Wednesday by The Telegraph. The tournament was scheduled for 27 to 30 August at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort, in Plymouth (Michigan), and was due to cap off the circuit’s 2026 season. In fact, tickets are still on sale on the official website, but everything points to the event being officially cancelled shortly.

The British newspaper, through its golf specialist James Corrigan, says that players have been informed that the LIV Golf Team Championship, endowed this season with a prize fund of $40 million — around £30 million —, has been cancelled. The Telegraph frames the decision within the climate of uncertainty surrounding the future of the circuit after it emerged that the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) will withdraw its financial backing on the current terms at the end of the season.

The information represents a further step beyond the rumours that had been circulating over recent weeks. It is no longer just that the staging of the tournament was in doubt or that preparations had been halted: according to The Telegraph, the cancellation has already been communicated to the players.

A story that, in any case, can hardly have surprised members of the circuit. Martin Kaymer practically anticipated it three weeks ago during the LIV Golf UK held at the JCB Golf & Country Club. The German, captain of the Cleeks GC, had taken part in a captains’ meeting and subsequently publicly acknowledged that he saw it as “highly unlikely” that the Michigan final would take place.

Kaymer went even further and put the chances of the Team Championship continuing at just five per cent. His words were particularly significant because they came from one of LIV‘s captains and followed meetings held with tour officials.

Doubts increased still further a few days later. At the end of July reports began to appear that already assumed the cancellation and even suggested that suppliers and contractors connected to the tournament had had their travel arrangements cancelled. Reuters then reported that LIV was preparing to announce the suspension of the Michigan event, although the officially planned announcement did not materialise.

Now, the information from The Telegraph adds a particularly significant piece: LIV is said to have internally told its players that the tournament will not be played. The cancellation of Michigan would also be the second suffered by the LIV Golf calendar this season, after the tournament due to be held in New Orleans from 25 to 28 June also failed to take place.

If publicly confirmed by the circuit, next week’s LIV Golf Indianapolis would become the final event of the 2026 season. A tournament that would also arrive without the drama of deciding the individual title after Jon Rahm mathematically secured his third consecutive crown in New York.

All this happens while LIV works against the clock on its future. Its CEO, Scott O’Neil, announced just last week that the circuit had reached an agreement with a new lead investor, not yet publicly identified, who should play a key role in the competition’s new phase from 2027.

The news from The Telegraph, however, confirms that before thinking about that new phase LIV will have to close a particularly turbulent 2026 season and that, barring a new twist in events, it will end earlier than planned and without its traditional big team finale.
