A Spaniard for another. Eugenio López Chacarra has left and now Luis Masaveu arrives. The young and promising golfer from Madrid is the new signing for Fireballs led by Sergio García of LIV Golf. The Saudi league will therefore continue to have four Spaniards in the 2025 season: Jon Rahm, leading Legion XIII, and Sergio García, captain, David Puig and Luis Masaveu in the Fireballs.
Masaveu completes a fully Spanish-speaking team, as the fourth member is Mexican Abraham Ancer. Thus, LIV Golf will continue to have two Spanish-speaking teams, alongside the Torque of Joaco Niemann, Sebastián Muñoz, Carlos Ortiz and Mito Pereira.
Masaveu turned 22 last December. He is one of the young Spaniards with the most potential. His amateur career has been brilliant. Without needing to go to the United States, he has achieved several victories, been a cornerstone in national teams, and shone brightly in the last US Amateur, where he fell in the semi-finals after a fratricidal duel with Josele Ballester.
However, his most brilliant moment as an amateur came in the last Open Championship at Royal Troon. He qualified through the preliminary and had an outstanding week, making the cut in his only participation so far in a Major. Afterwards, he also made the cut in the Open de España, the International Series of Qatar and the PIF Saudi International. His best result was a ninth place in Qatar.
Masaveu competed at the end of last year in the qualifying schools of the DP World Tour and LIV Golf. In the former, he missed the cut in the final at Infinitum Golf, while in the latter he also did not reach the final round. Recently, in an interview with Ten Golf published on 30 December, he stated that playing in LIV Golf was not a possibility and that he was focusing on the Challenge Tour, a circuit for which he had obtained the card through the Global Amateur Pathway. Obviously, things have taken a significant turn in the last ten days. The Challenge Tour is put on hold, although he might play some tournaments, just as in the DP World Tour in the same way that Jon Rahm or Hatton are doing, to name just two examples.
Oficial: Masaveu se mete en el bolsillo la tarjeta del Challenge Tour
Masaveu has signed for one year with the Fireballs. Now, it’s up to him to prove on the field that he can continue in LIV Golf in the following years through good results. The arrival of Masaveu means that, for now, Josele Ballester will not sign for the Fireballs, at least this year. It should be remembered that the golfer from Castellón has decided to remain an amateur until the Final of the Nationals of the NCAA in May and will play in April at the Masters Tournament. This, obviously, has complicated his jump to LIV, where Sergio García was waiting for him with open arms, as by the time he turns professional, the Saudi league would have held seven tournaments, half of the calendar. This does not close the doors to Ballester joining LIV in the future, although the young golfer from Castellón has not yet decided where he will play when he turns professional. His main goal now is to finish first in the PGA Tour University and thus secure full PGA Tour rights.
