Talor Gooch (-7) has delivered his best round of the year in LIV Golf. He has submitted a scorecard of 63 strokes at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon and has positioned himself as the tournament leader tied with Bryson DeChambeau (-7), who doesn’t seem very willing to ease off. Indeed, overall, it has been his best performance since 2023, the year he won the individual ranking of the circuit. The American notably lowered his level since he questioned the Major winners due to the absence of LIV Golf golfers who failed to qualify. In short, he missed receiving an invitation himself given his level on the circuit.
In 2023, he won three times and finished all but one tournament among the top 22. However, in 2024 he only secured five top 10 finishes without any victory, and this year he had not yet finished among the top ten. His performance was not a disaster. Certainly better than others. But he hadn’t regained his best form since that fascinating and controversial year of 2023. It’s as if he had fallen into a depression due to the lack of external recognition, beyond LIV, for his results. It should be noted that he was also not considered by Zach Johnson for the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Gooch, with nine birdies on his card, has regained that killer instinct that has always defined him when he’s sharp with the irons, leaving many balls very close. As we say, he has placed himself in the first position, alongside Bryson DeChambeau and with a one-stroke advantage over Louis Oosthuizen (-6). The two Major winners managed to lead the tournament at some point during their rounds, but a poor drive from Bryson on the 15th, a par 5, and a very bad second shot from Oosthuizen on the 16th, caused them to lose ground. Also up there, of course, is Joaco Niemann (-4).
The Spaniards have not started well at all. Very poor first day in Korea. Only David Puig (-1) has managed to play under par, although they have left a lot of ground to cover. In fact, it could almost be said that victory is out of reach, although there are still 36 holes left to try to recover positions and aim to get, at least, among the top 10. In addition to David Puig, Jon Rahm made par with an eagle on the last hole, Luis Masaveu finished +1, and Sergio García ended with +5. Very eventful rounds. Too many mistakes.
