The World Ranking (OWGR) continues to review the application from LIV Golf to obtain world ranking points, as confirmed this week by its chairman, Trevor Immelman. The process remains open following recent changes announced by the tour, including the shift from 54 to 72-hole tournaments starting from the 2026 season.
Immelman explained that he maintains continuous contact with LIV Golf since the tour formally resubmitted its application last June. In this context, Trevor noted that Scott O’Neil, chief executive of LIV, informed the world ranking of the format change before it was made public.
“They are going to play 72 holes and with larger fields,” Immelman recalled, highlighting that the OWGR is reviewing the tour’s evolution as part of the analysis of its application.
The lack of recognition by the world ranking has been one of the main obstacles for LIV Golf since its inception. Without OWGR points, its players have dropped in the world rankings, which directly affects their chances of accessing the Majors, which use the ranking as one of their main qualifying criteria.
The OWGR chairman insisted that dialogue with LIV is constant and that the aim is to manage the process with integrity and consistency with the ranking’s rules. However, he clarified that no decision has yet been made on whether to accept the tour.
LIV Golf is hopeful that the OWGR will issue a resolution before the start of the 2026 season, which will begin on 4 February in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Until then, the tour’s status in the world ranking remains under evaluation.
