The 2025 season of LIV Golf draws to a close this week with the Michigan Team Championship, or in other words, the grand team final, after the tournament in Indianapolis crowned Jon Rahm as the individual classification champion last Sunday. An event that features novelties compared to the previous season and will be contested over four days of competition
The course at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth, Michigan, will host the tournament, which will kick off on Wednesday with a knockout round where the teams that finished in the last two positions, 12th and 13th, will face each other. They will play two singles matches and a foursomes duel (alternate shots) with a total of three points at stake. The first to reach two points will advance to the next round, and the loser will be eliminated.
Two days later, on Friday, 22 August, the quarter-finals will be played in match play format. The captains, in order of team overall standings, will choose their opponent. Each duel will consist of two singles matches and one foursomes, as in Wednesday’s knockout round, with three points at stake. The teams that first reach two points will advance to the tournament semi-finals.
On Saturday, 23, the six quarter-final winning teams will compete in the final phase for the title, while the six losing teams will continue playing in the classification bracket. As in the previous round, the captains of the higher-ranked teams will choose their opponent, and the same format will be repeated. The three winners of the final phase will qualify to compete for the title.
On Sunday, 24, the format changes to stroke play. All 48 players from the 12 teams compete (only those from the team eliminated on Wednesday are excluded), and each team’s score will be the sum of its four members’ scores, ranked from lowest to highest in strokes. Each team will obtain its final position based on its ranking in different levels:
· 1st to 3rd place: the finalists
· 4th to 6th place: the teams that fell in the semi-finals
· 7th to 9th place: the winners of Saturday’s classification bracket
· 10th to 12th place: the losers of Saturday’s classification bracket
“I think we’ll see some teams fall that we might not have expected,” predicts Cameron Smith, captain of the Ripper GC. “The pressure increases and every day is important,” added Bryson DeChambeau, captain of the Crushers GC. “The new format reflects the league’s goal of constantly improving both the competition and the fan experience, while providing an exciting and memorable event,” concluded Ross Hallett, executive vice president and director of events at LIV Golf.
