This Wednesday marks the start of one of the most turbulent seasons of LIV Golf, which is saying something. After the exodus of Koepka and Reed, the Saudi circuit sails through seas of doubts and uncertainties but, after all, it’s time for the players to compete. For the second consecutive year, it takes place at Riyadh Golf Club in a night tournament played entirely under artificial lights.
The season begins with a more than well-represented Spanish contingent. A luxury quintet: Jon Rahm, Sergio García, David Puig, Josele Ballester, and David Puig. The first continues to lead Legion XIII, the other four as the quartet of the Fireballs.
Among the five mentioned, of course Jon, Sergio, and David, are among the favourites to win the trophy at Riyadh Golf Club. Undoubtedly, Rahm, the 2025 overall champion, wants to redeem himself from last season and win an individual trophy as soon as possible. The man from Barrika has been one of the great promoters of the change to 72 holes and will want to prove that the change suits him perfectly. Sergio García, who couldn’t finish in Bahrain, will undoubtedly want to start his fourth season in the Saudi circuit with the intention of returning to victory.
However, there’s another name that cannot be overlooked. It’s Josele Ballester. Who would have thought just eight months ago, but he is one of the favourites for the title this week. The facts speak for themselves. Less than 70 days ago, on this very course, he lifted his first professional title. He feels comfortable on this course. At the PIF Saudi International, he won convincingly against a strong field, reaching 22 under par and with a three-stroke advantage. In LIV, he already came close to tasting victory in Chicago, but ended up conceding in the playoff. Josele doesn’t forget that he struggled to bring out his best version after turning professional last May, but he starts his first full year as a professional and is among the favourites to dream big. It wouldn’t surprise anyone.
David Puig, on the other hand, arrives with the label of “next step”. Champion of the DP World Tour in Australia, the Catalan knows that his talent demands more in LIV. He has amply demonstrated that he can win abroad and now it’s time to do it here as well. The moment seems right. Luis Masaveu is in his second stint in LIV and at 23 years old, he knows it’s time to watch and learn like a sponge. Last year’s experience will undoubtedly help him.
Among the main attractions will undoubtedly be Bryson DeChambeau. With all the news surrounding his renewal, his performance on the field will be under the scrutiny of all fans, every shot will be closely analysed. Joaquin Niemann, after his five victories in 2025, is another one to watch closely.
