LIV Golf does not give up. The Saudi circuit has submitted a new application for inclusion in the World Golf Ranking scoring system (OWGR), as confirmed by the organisation itself this Friday. The news breaks during the first round of the LIV Golf Andalucía.
The request was officially received by the OWGR on 30 June, and according to South African Trevor Immelman, OWGR chairman and former Masters champion, the review is already underway.
“The OWGR board is committed to a thorough evaluation process of all applications. LIV Golf’s will be reviewed according to the established criteria, to ensure the fairness, integrity, and consistency of the system,” Immelman assured.
This is a significant step, as the previous application by LIV Golf was rejected in October 2023, mainly due to doubts about the circuit’s access system. Since then, the relationship between the two parties deteriorated. In March 2024, Greg Norman, then commissioner of LIV, announced that the league was giving up on pursuing OWGR points.
However, the appointment of Scott O’Neil as the new CEO of LIV Golf in January seems to have marked a change in direction. Immelman himself has acknowledged having recent conversations with him, including a face-to-face meeting during the Masters: “We have spoken a couple of times on the phone and met at the Masters. It has mainly been an introduction. Until now, there had been no formal request. The ball was in their court,” Immelman explained to Associated Press. However, details are still missing, such as what has changed in the inclusion request compared to the one submitted two seasons ago that could change the institution’s leaders’ minds.
This new request once again opens up the possibility for LIV Golf players —including names like Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, or Brooks Koepka— to once again earn valid points for the world ranking, something essential for their access to major tournaments and majors.
For now, there is no specific date for a decision, but the OWGR has promised to keep fans informed as the process progresses.
