This Thursday, at the Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan, the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give began, an LPGA tournament offering three million dollars in prizes and serving as a prelude to the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. An event with a strong Spanish representation where Carlota Ciganda (-8) heads into the weekend fully engaged in the battle for the final victory.
The Navarrese golfer, after a notable tournament start on Thursday with a round of 69 strokes, was very precise with her irons this afternoon, recovering some missed fairways, and particularly accurate with the putter to sign a sensational 67, with no less than seven birdies and two bogeys. Carlota has gained momentum and co-leads the standings alongside South Korean Hye-Jin Choi (-8), French Celine Boutier (-8), and Australian Karis Davidson (-8) with a one-stroke advantage over a large group of up to six chasers.
Ciganda has nine top-ten finishes in the LPGA so far in 2025. The Spaniard, who won the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España of the Ladies European Tour at the end of last year, will seek her third victory on the American tour this weekend, where she won two tournaments in 2016.
Azahara Muñoz (-4) and Julia López (-4), who both played 68 strokes in the first round, have mirrored their scorecards today with a 72, allowing them to make the cut and stay close to the top 20, with intact chances of climbing higher. Unfortunately, the Spanish players present at this event on the US women’s circuit have not been able to make a clean sweep, and both Carolina López-Chacarra (+2) and Fátima Fernández Cano (+3) missed a cut set at one under par.
