It won’t be easy, not due to the immense parity in the tournament, nor the large number of competitors she faces, nor, above all, the high level and prestige of these competitors, with some of the world’s best in the fight, but Carlota Ciganda (-11) has held her ground like a warrior this Saturday at the Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan, to keep her chances of fighting for victory intact.
The Navarrese golfer will head into the final 18 holes of the tournament tied for the lead with five players: Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom (-11), Denmark’s Nana Koerstz Madsen (-11), the USA’s Lexi Thompson (-11), Paraguay’s Sofía García (-11), and South Korea’s Hye-Jin Choi (-11). It’s an all-out battle for the win before competing in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Carlota, who started the day with a painful bogey on her first hole, managed to straighten her round by getting back to par with a birdie on the 8th and striking in the second half of the course, with three more flawless birdies, one to close her round, for a scorecard of 69 strokes. The Spaniard played very long (311 yards on average) and precise from the tee (11 fairways out of 14), and was once again accurate with her irons (14 out of 18 greens in regulation).
If she manages to maintain this level tomorrow, Sunday, she will undoubtedly be in a position to seek what would be her third victory on the US women’s circuit and her first since 2016, when she won two events. Carlota will have to keep a close eye on her co-leaders and also not lose sight of players like Karis Davidson (-9), Megan Khang (-8), Chanettee Wannasaen (-8), Bronte Law (-8), or Celine Boutier (-8).

Azahara Muñoz (-6), with 70 strokes on this ‘moving day’, hasn’t been able to keep up with the pace of the leaders, but remains well-positioned in the top 20, with a chance of achieving a great result. It was a tougher day for Julia López (-3), with 73 strokes, who is tied for 35th place and will try to finish the tournament by playing under par again, as she did on Thursday, to climb the rankings.
