Carlota Ciganda (-16) has achieved victory at the Meijer LPGA Classic, a tournament on the American women’s circuit that took place this week, from Thursday to Sunday, at the Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan. Drawing from Spanish sayings, one could say that patience is a virtue because the Navarrese golfer has had to rely on dedication and perseverance for a long time in search of a victory that eluded her. But after a sensational Sunday, she has lifted a trophy on the tour once again. A title that comes at a crucial moment, with the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship just around the corner.

No less than nine years has the Pamplona native had to wait to win again in the United States. Her only two victories to date on the LPGA were the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship in October 2016 and the Citibanamex Lorena Ochoa Invitational in November of the same year. That seemed to be the start of a career filled with great successes and many victories for the Spaniard. But golf is an incredibly challenging sport, where things are not as easy as they seem, and one must fight tirelessly, day after day, making consistency the best ally.

It’s not that Ciganda hasn’t won since that successful 2016, not at all. The Spaniard has left her mark all these years with great triumphs on the Ladies European Tour, where she has eight titles, five of them after that historic month on the LPGA, and in the Solheim, where she is a true legend. But she had long been eager to lift a trophy on the other side of the Atlantic, and it was this Sunday with a final round of 67 strokes, thus breaking the tie among six players at the start of the tournament’s final round in her favour.

Carlota wasn’t as precise from the tee as yesterday, hitting fewer fairways, nor did she go as long, but she played wonderfully with her irons, hitting 14 greens in regulation, barely made any mistakes, and sharpened her putter to make the most of her opportunities. She started the day with a painful bogey on the 2nd, but her response was spectacular with birdies on holes 6, 8, 9, and 10. On the par-three 13th, she made another bogey that seemed to take her out of the fight, but nothing could be further from the truth. Three birdies in the last four holes gave her the victory she had been waiting for so long.

The final attempt by South Korean Hye-Jin Choi (-15) to force a playoff with a birdie on the last hole was to no avail. Carlota was the best on the course, and on that par-five 18th, she matched her rival’s four to seal her success. A third title on the LPGA with which to continue expanding her record and, above all, to boost her morale ahead of next week’s major, because winning a Major must now be the next challenge for the Navarrese golfer, who, with four top 10s and this victory in 2025, will arrive at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco ready for anything.
