The LPGA Tour started the year with an unusual, wintry script in Orlando: cold, wind, delays, suspension, and a tournament reduced to 54 holes. Amid the weather chaos, the champion was the one who had signed off before the weather definitively broke the deck. And that was, once again, finally, Nelly Korda.
The Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions was resolved in the least orthodox way: Korda did not hit a single shot on the last day, but she didn’t need to. She had done the work when it was hardest to do. Her third round, an 8 under par (64), was the authoritative blow that turned Sunday into an administrative formality: leader with -13, three shots ahead, and the feeling that the tournament already had an owner even though there were loose ends in the air.
The third day, held entirely on Saturday, had everything, and almost all of it very good: seven birdies, one bogey, and an eagle holed from the fairway on the par 4 of the 3rd hole. A shot of those that are recorded in February and continue to be replayed in November when reviewing the moments of the year. And, above all, a round built with a very Korda-like thread: commitment to every shot and patience. “Golf is a game of inches,” she explained afterward, recalling how many times last year she felt the movie turned its back on her for a tiny detail. This time, those inches fell her way.
The tournament did not want to be a normal tournament. On Saturday afternoon, with conditions already at the limit, play was suspended. The conditions were unplayable. Extreme winds and cold. On the 17th hole, it was impossible to putt. And on Sunday, while part of the field still had to complete the third round, the situation became definitively at the limit. With very low temperatures and the wind picking up, the organization made the decision: the championship was officially reduced to 54 holes as soon as the players still on the course finished. Korda, who had set the bar very high the previous day, was declared the champion. No one reached her impossible record.
Behind, enduring in a week for survivors, was Amy Yang, resident in Orlando, second by three shots after completing what was left of her round. And, with them, a leaderboard conditioned by the weather and by one of those decisions that change the tone of a tournament: when Sunday becomes a waiting room, Saturday’s round becomes, directly, the outcome.
For Korda, the triumph has several readings. It is her first victory since the The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican in 2024; it is also her second success at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, where she had already won the Gainbridge LPGA in 2021; and, perhaps most significantly, it is the demonstration she needed in a season start that had eluded her: before this week, she had never finished higher than second place in this tournament despite accumulating very good results.
The champion did not hide the value of what she had done on Saturday: “Yesterday was probably one of the best rounds I have played in my career,” she said, highlighting the process and the way of competing when the course stops being a course and becomes a survival test. She spoke of patience as a hammer-word in brutal conditions; of choosing, even if the choice is not perfect, but choosing with 100% commitment; and of shielding herself from the “outside noise,” even staying away from social media.
In a course start turned into a small endurance test, Korda found just what she was looking for: a victory that does not come by inertia, but by conviction. A 64 with cold and wind, when everything invited survival. Nelly achieves with this triumph to silence the ghosts of 2025, a year in which she did not achieve any victory.
