Michelle Wie West already has a date for her return to a Major. The 2014 US Women’s Open champion has announced she will play the 2026 edition, from 4 to 7 June at Riviera Country Club, a legendary course making its debut as a tournament host. It will also be the first time this Major for women is played in the Los Angeles area.

After announcing in February her entry into the WTGL, the American now takes another step in her return to competition. Is it a gradual comeback? Everything points to no, but in this sport you can never say for sure.

The American, champion of the US Open itself twelve years ago, has not played in a Major for three seasons, since the 2023 US Open, and has gone five years without making the cut at a Major, since the Women’s PGA Championship in 2021.

In this way the American is taking the last chance to play a Major available to her after her win at Pinehurst. More than ten years have passed since her 2014 victory, and therefore she would not have entry to the tournament as a past champion, but her exemption remains valid until 2026 thanks to category S-19, corresponding to deferred exemptions under the USGA‘s family championship policy. Wie, a mother of two, has been able to take advantage of this rule, designed precisely for players who interrupt their careers for maternity. 2026 was her last chance and she wants to make the most of it.

We must wait to see whether it is another step in Michelle’s return to competition or whether she simply intends to enjoy her last waltz. Time will tell.
