Sergio García has shared with Golf Magic his thoughts after not being one of Luke Donald‘s six picks for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage. It wasn’t a big surprise, but that doesn’t take away from the deep disappointment of the Spanish golfer. It was his main goal this season and the primary reason he decided a few months ago to pay the fines of the DP World Tour and rejoin the European Tour.
The golfer from Castellón, who holds the record for points in the Ryder Cup, confirmed that Luke Donald contacted him to inform him that he would not be on the team. The 2017 Masters champion appreciated the gesture and the tone of the Englishman’s call. “The call with Luke was fine, although obviously it wasn’t the call I wanted, but the conversation was correct,” García said. “Now, the only thing I can do is support the team from home. It’s that simple. I will be watching and cheering for the European team,” he noted.
In fact, being left out of the team is the main reason he decided to withdraw at the last minute from the Irish Open, which starts tomorrow at the K Club. “I wanted so much to be part of that team that, mentally, it was quite tough. I didn’t want to go there and not be fully involved in the tournament or anything, so I decided to take a little break and spend it with the family and do a couple of things, you know, things outside of golf, just to reset a bit and recharge the batteries.”
Sergio is currently in New York. Yesterday he attended Carlos Alcaraz’s quarter-final match live, and today he planned to play golf with the Murcian tennis player himself, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and David Puig. In principle, Sergio’s next tournament will be the Open de España, at least he confirmed his presence at the time. We’ll have to see if he decides to add any more events to his schedule.
