José María Olazábal, one of the great figures of Spanish golf, with an extremely brilliant sporting career that includes, among other things, two victories in the Masters Tournament in 1994 and 1999, joins the structure of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation as an advisor.

The incorporation of José María Olazábal is an initiative led by Juan Guerrero-Burgos, the new President of the RFEG, who believes that “José María Olazábal represents the values of golf, work, effort, perseverance, humility, respect for the rules… for all these things and many more his advice is a great honour for our sport. The new generations of Spanish golfers, undoubtedly of a very high quality, can learn a lot from his experience”.

the main objective of his advice focuses on the Pro Spain Team Programme

Apart from other issues that may arise in the future, the main objective of his advice focuses on the Pro Spain Team Programme –which facilitates the transition of amateur golfers to the professional field–, the National Teams and the National Blume Golf School, an institution with 35 years of history through which great golfers have passed, such as Jon Rahm.

José María Olazábal highlights that “when the Royal Spanish Golf Federation proposed the possibility of collaborating with the Pro Spain Team, the National Teams and the National Blume School, in order to motivate and inspire all of them to achieve the highest possible goals, I did not hesitate to accept the opportunity. I hope to help the younger generations by transmitting the values and knowledge I have acquired over the years”.

Olazábal’s career

Born in Hondarribia (Gipuzkoa) on 5 February 1966, José María Olazábal has in his brilliant sporting career two Masters Tournaments, the spearhead of around thirty victories in various top-level professional tournaments.

Special mention also for his successful performance as captain in the historic victory of Europe over the United States in the 2012 Ryder Cup, leading an epic victory, forged through an incredible comeback that went down in the annals of this competition as ‘The Miracle of Medinah’.

José María Olazábal’s successful relationship with the Ryder Cup dates back a long time –four wins in seven participations as a player and captain– to the point that he is considered, in conjunction with Severiano Ballesteros, as the ‘Best Pair’ in the history of this tournament, a statement supported by their 11 wins in 13 matches.

A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame since 2009, José María Olazábal was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports in 2013, one of the most prestigious international recognitions granted in our country to those people or institutions who, in addition to the exemplarity of their life and work, have contributed with their effort to the improvement, cultivation, promotion or dissemination of the values of sport.
