He started as one of the big favourites to win in the final round of the Principal Charity Classic, the 12th tournament of the season on the PGA Tour Champions, after closing the penultimate round with a two-shot lead. And although he had to fight until the end, winning in the playoff, Miguel Ángel Jiménez (-17) achieved his third victory of the season at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa, on the US senior circuit.

With this victory, the man from Malaga equals what was his best season on the tour to date, in 2022, when he also won three events. So far this year, he has triumphed in the Hassan II Trophy in Morocco and in mid-March at the Hoag Classic, adding Sunday’s victory to further extend his lead at the top of the overall circuit standings, known as the Charles Schwab Cup.

The ‘pisha’ had to contend this afternoon with an immense Soren Kjeldsen (-17), who delivered the best round of the day, a tremendous 63 to almost clinch the title, and with Cameron Percy (-17), who played his cards to also get into the playoff. Both the Australian and Miguel went to play the 18th hole one shot behind the Dane, but neither missed the birdie on this short par four, just over 300 yards, to take the tournament’s outcome to an extra hole.

There, although all three missed the fairway, the most skilful was the Spaniard, who, despite having sent his ball to an area of intermediate rough, managed to recover wonderfully to seal, with a birdie that he left practically on the 18th, where the playoff was played, his third victory so far in 2025, a success he celebrated by donning his samurai ‘back’ with the putter. The Argentine Ángel Cabrera (-8), Jiménez’s main pursuer in the overall circuit, had to settle for a tied 24th place, allowing the man from Malaga to extend his lead in pursuit of his first Charles Schwab Cup.

No less than 16 tournaments still lie ahead for Miguel Ángel to try to make this year the most successful of his career on the PGA Tour Champions. Today marks his 16th victory on the US senior tour. At 61 years of age, Jiménez faces new rivals each year, 50-year-old players who land on the circuit, but nothing and no one seems able to take him out of the fight. His eternal youth is demonstrated once again with an impeccable playoff at the Principal Charity Classic.
