Miguel Ángel Jiménez (-11) is immortal. Nothing you didn’t know, but he has confirmed it again this week. The Spaniard has triumphed in Morocco and has once again tasted the sweetness of victory more than two years later. He has claimed victory on African soil and the Trophy Hassan II is the fourteenth win in the PGA Tour Champions that the man from Malaga adds to his collection.
He started this Sunday at the top of the leaderboard tied with Steven Alker (-9) and everything remained level until the penultimate hole at Royal Golf Dar es Salaam. That’s where he brought out the magic. He hit an epic drive on the short par 4 of the Moroccan course that bounced a few metres before the green and rolled to just about three metres from the flag. He holed the eagle putt and Alker’s par gave him a two-shot lead and put the victory on a plate. A four to close the tournament on the 18th hole and the victory in the bag.
The Spaniard has been the best this week with three rounds under par of 70, 69, and 69 strokes each. A total of eleven under par on this course which is par 73. In third position and just behind Alker finished Ernie Els (-7) and in the top ten Padraig Harrington, Thomas Bjorn, and Stewart Cink (-3).
The Trophy Hassan II is the second tournament of the season after the one played in Hawaii two weeks ago in which Ernie Els triumphed and the Spaniard himself finished in second position. There is a lot of season ahead, but at this moment Jiménez is already the leader of the Charles Schwab Cup and, above all, demonstrating that he is in immaculate form.
