Less than 24 hours after conquering the prestigious Women’s Amateur Championship and making history in Spanish golf as the sixth national player to achieve it, Paula Martín has made her first big decision. For those who don’t know her well, it might be surprising.
The triumph in the Women’s Amateur guaranteed her access to the Evian Championship 2025, the AIG Women’s Open 2025, the US Women’s Open 2026, and the Chevron Championship 2026, the most important tournaments in the women’s professional calendar. Of all of them, the Evian was going to be her second Major as an amateur, having debuted a few weeks ago in the US Women’s Open. However, it will not be so. Paula has told TenGolf that she will not play the Evian Championship.
The reason is that it coincides with the European Team Championship held in Chantilly in the second week of July. Paula had already given her word and did not want to backtrack. Something that, on the other hand, would have been entirely understandable. However, for the Madrid native, that week is special, and she doesn’t want to miss it. Not even for a Major.
“I had already committed to the team, and it’s a tournament I’m really excited to play,” Paula explains. “Representing Spain has always been very special for me, and I didn’t want to leave my teammates at a time like this.”
“It wasn’t an easy decision. We’ve talked a lot at home and with my team, and in the end, we all agreed that right now what fulfills me the most is being with the girls at the European. It’s a unique opportunity, and I want to experience it to the fullest. I hope I can play more Evian in the future, but this tournament with Spain is where I want to be right now,” she adds.
After this news, it will be the AIG Women’s Open where she will play the second Major of her career. A spectacular closing of the circle considering it will be held at Royal Porthcawl, where her coach, Alejandro Larrazábal, won the British Amateur 23 years ago. “Not even in our dreams could we have imagined such a perfect script,” concluded the Madrid native about this blessed coincidence of fate.
