Ludvig Aberg finished the Tour Championship this Sunday and his next appointment will be in an operating room. The Swedish golfer is going to undergo arthroscopy this same week to resolve a meniscus tear he suffers in his left knee.
The discomfort began during the Wells Fargo Championship, back in May. That week he withdrew from the tournament, but with conservative treatment he has managed to finish the season. Moreover, he finished in 16th place in the Tour Championship, after a discreet week at East Lake, where without the strokes that were previously given for the FedEx classification he would have been the 19th out of 30.
In principle, the intervention is not too important. Normally, he should be hitting balls in a month, so he should be able to compete before the end of the year. Moreover, the truth is that he needs it to meet the minimum number of tournaments required by the DP World Tour to maintain membership. Aberg has so far played two valid tournaments, the Scottish Open and the Olympic Games, and must reach the figure of four. Although he could obtain a medical exemption, precisely because of this operation, he would still have time to reach the four in 2024. For example, for Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Final he is already qualified and both are in November. That would be his perfect plan. If he chooses to compete earlier to arrive better prepared for the United Arab Emirates, he could include the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters, which would be a big hit for the event, or the Genesis in South Korea, the week after Sotogrande.
In addition, he would still have time the week after the Dubai Final to defend the title achieved last year at the RSM Classic, one of the autumn tournaments of the DP World Tour. Where he will not be able to play is at the Irish Open next week or at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, which will take place in two weeks, just before the Spanish Open.
Jordan Spieth has also been through the operating room. He did it last week, after failing to qualify for the Tour Championship. His case is a bit more serious. It’s about the left wrist. In principle, as Spieth himself has commented, he says goodbye to competition until 2025, although it is not ruled out that he could play the PNC Championship or the Hero World Challenge in December.
