Scottie Scheffler already has his place secured at Bethpage. Officially. It’s only the start of June and the maths already dictate that the World Number One will play in this year’s Ryder Cup.
Not that there were doubts about his presence, but it is still striking that almost four months ahead, he already has his place guaranteed. It speaks volumes about the dominance the Texan is imposing. God forbid, only an injury would prevent him from being at the biggest team golf event. Right now, he could hang up his clubs for more than three months and still be qualified for the rematch of the defeat in Rome.
Scheffler thus becomes the first player to secure his place in the United States team for the duel to be held at the iconic Bethpage Black course (New York) from September 26 to 28.
With more than 25,900 points accumulated, Scheffler leads the US team standings, driven by a sensational season in which he has already lifted three PGA Tour trophies, including his third major, the PGA Championship, with a commanding five-stroke victory at Quail Hollow. The victory at the Memorial was the final touch needed: “Representing my country in the Ryder has been one of the greatest honours of my career,” Scheffler declared. “I am looking forward to this third experience and giving it my all to help the team reclaim the cup.”
It will be his third consecutive appearance, following his debut in 2021 at Whistling Straits and his presence in Rome 2023. For captain Keegan Bradley, having Scheffler as a cornerstone is a reason for confidence: “He is number one for a reason. His consistency and commitment to the team are exemplary. Scottie is a natural leader and a fierce competitor.” The golfer himself seeks revenge after the tough defeat in Italy.
Automatic qualification will close on August 17, after the BMW Championship, at which point the top six team members will be determined. The remaining six names will be selected by Bradley after the Tour Championship, scheduled for the end of August. Currently, the five American players with direct passports to Bethpage would be Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Russell Henley.
