Ben James now officially has the path open to the PGA Tour. The player from the Universidad de Virginia finished as Number One in the final ranking of the PGA Tour University class of 2026 and, with that, obtains the PGA Tour card through the 2027 season.

James has closed his college career the same way he began it: at the very top. He has held the Number One spot throughout the season and confirmed it definitively with a 16th-place finish in the stroke play phase of the NCAA Championship, which is taking place en el Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. That result was enough to keep him in the top final position and secure the big prize reserved for the best collegiate player: membership of the PGA Tour.

His professional debut could come as early as the RBC Canadian Open, which is played from 5 to 8 June. It is the first tournament for which he will be eligible as a circuit member.

James thus joins an increasingly significant list of players who have made the direct jump to the PGA Tour through PGA Tour University. Before him did Ludvig Åberg, 2023; Michael Thorbjornsen, 2024; and David Ford, 2025. Now it’s Ben James’s turn, who has completed an outstanding collegiate career, with seven wins and 35 top-10s in 46 tournaments.

The Virginia player also equals a very special record. He becomes, together with John Pak in 2021, the only golfer to have led the PGA Tour University from start to finish, week after week, throughout the season. A demonstration of absolute consistency.

Beyond the Number One, the final PGA Tour University ranking also distributes cards and professional opportunities for the top 25 players of the class. Positions 2 to 10 obtain membership of the Korn Ferry Tour for the remainder of the 2026 season. That is, they will have a card on the second U.S. circuit, starting with the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank, which will be played from 11 to 14 June.

The final number two was Christiaan Maas, from Texas, who fought until the end for first place after a spring with five top-10s and a victory. His 19th place at the NCAA Championship was not enough to catch James, but it does guarantee him an immediate move to the Korn Ferry Tour. Alongside him secure Korn Ferry Tour cards Jase Summy, from Oklahoma; Filip Jakubcik, from Arizona; Luke Potter, from Texas; Tommy Morrison, from Texas; William Sides, from SMU; Mahanth Chirravuri, from Pepperdine; Frankie Harris, from South Carolina; and Wells Williams, from Vanderbilt.

Additionally, those players receive added benefits for the PGA Tour Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. Those classified between positions 2 and 5 gain direct access to the Final Stage, while positions 6 to 10 enter the Second Stage.

The third route opened by PGA Tour University is for players ranked between positions 11 and 25. All of them obtain membership of the PGA Tour Americas for the remainder of the 2026 season, beginning at the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open presented by Syndeo, from 25 to 28 June. They also receive an exemption to the Second Stage of the PGA Tour Q-School.

In that group appear Lance Simpson, from Tennessee; Michael Alexander Mjaaseth, from Arizona State; Paul Chang, from Virginia; Tom Fischer, from Ole Miss; Cameron Tankersley, from Ole Miss; Matthew Kress, from Florida; Bryan Lee, from Virginia; Zachery Pollo, from Arizona; Daniel Svärd, from Northwestern; Ethan Evans, from Duke; Mesa Falleur, from New Mexico; Brady Siravo, from Pepperdine; Garrett Endicott, from Mississippi State; Cohen Trolio, from Ole Miss; and Ryan Voois, from Illinois.

The class of 2026 is the sixth since the creation of PGA Tour University. Since 2021, a total of 129 players have obtained benefits through this system. With Ben James, there are now 25 PGA Tour University alumni with PGA Tour membership in the 2026 season, while 31 players from this programme have already combined for 55 professional victories worldwide.
