Jorge Campillo has decided to burn the boats and do everything possible to maintain his playing rights on the PGA Tour. Until a few days ago he had not made the decision whether from the US Open he would focus his schedule in Europe or if, on the contrary, he would continue to compete in American circuit tournaments. Well, the golfer from Norba, Cáceres, has finally decided to bet everything on the red of the PGA Tour.
This week he is in Spain, working with José Carlos Gutiérrez, his coach, trying to fine-tune his game for the new batch of tournaments he has ahead. His plan is to play four consecutive weeks: Rocket Mortgage Classic, in Detroit, John Deere Classic, in Illinois, Genesis Scottish Open, in Scotland, and Open Championship at Royal Troon. Afterwards he will have a couple of weeks off and will play, if necessary, the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, the last regular tournament of the PGA Tour. This week the Travelers Championship is being played, the last elevated of the season and Campillo was not in.
Interestingly, Campillo is currently in position 125 of the FedEx Cup, which are those who in principle, if there are no changes due to the agreement being negotiated between the American circuit and the Saudi PIF, will keep the card. That is, he has it well underway and the great objective is to give it a good push in the next month, with the ambitious idea of looking further up and getting into the top 50, which would allow him to enter all tournaments in 2025 no matter what happens. This last challenge is very important and to achieve it he would have to play very well.
Jorge has been closely following the US Open at Pinehurst. First because he loves golf and watches it whenever he can and second because his Olympic qualification was at stake. It was in the hands of David Puig. Finally, the Catalan golfer, making the cut in North Carolina, has managed to overtake Campillo in the ranking. Obviously, it has been a disappointment and a setback for the Extremaduran, who was very eager to participate in the Paris Games to represent Spain and to get rid of the thorn of Tokyo. In any case, he is the first Spanish reserve. If Rahm or Puig suffer any mishap, the substitute would be Campillo.
Regarding the North American-Scottish tour that starts next week, Campillo is especially eager to play that go a little beyond the sporting. Between the Rocket Mortgage and the John Deere he will make a technical stop in Bloomington, home of Indiana University, where they still remember him as one of the best golfers in the history of this center. So it will be a nice trip to remember some great moments he has lived in those parts of the American Midwest. The good thing about the two European dates, the Scottish and the Open is that they are valid for both circuits.
In this way, Jorge will have five tournaments ahead, between Detroit and the Wyndham, to keep the PGA Tour card at the first attempt.
