Jorge Campillo (-2) has made the cut at the Cognizant Classic. One out of one. First regular tournament of the PGA Tour that the Extremaduran plays in the United States and four rounds in the bag. He left a good part of the work done on Friday and finished it off early this Saturday, going out to play the 18th hole at seven in the morning local time.
Campillo was forced to make up ground in the second round after a first day of par at the Champion course of the PGA National. At least he needed to play under par and he fought for it. Conditions were not easy on Friday. The wind blew on Jack Nicklaus‘s course and the results suffered significantly. A round of two under par was worth its weight in gold. Precisely, the difficulties to play due to the wind caused a tremendous slowdown in the pace of play and prevented several players from finishing their round, including Campillo himself.
It was not the best day for the Norba golfer from tee to green, but he pulled it off with another master class around the green, as he did in Mexico. The only recovery he left on the way was on hole 11, where the mission was already impossible after sending his second shot into the water.
As we say, Jorge practically made the cut on Friday. His last shot of the day was the tee shot on hole 18. He preferred to hit from the tee late in the afternoon in Florida rather than today early in the morning, with colder weather and knowing that the ball was going to fly less.
Today he played the hole by the book. He didn’t suffer. He played to position, he looked for the green in three, he left himself a very good birdie option of about two and a half meters and two putts. Job done. Second consecutive cut on the PGA Tour. That’s ten cuts made in the last eleven tournaments. The only one he missed this year was in Bahrain.
Campillo will soon start the third round of the Cognizant. It’s the moving day, where he will try to recover positions and climb in the ranking. By the way, so far, his passage through the extremely difficult ‘bear trap’, that stretch of the course that goes from hole 15 to 17 and is considered one of the most difficult of the year on the PGA Tour, has been impeccable. So far, his accumulated score is one under par in two days.
As for the ranking, Bud Cauley (-11) leads with a one-stroke advantage over Garrick Higo (-10), two over Victor Perez and two over Jake Knapp (-9), winner last Sunday in Mexico.
