The scorecards have been passed around for another day in the second round of the John Deere Classic. The cut has finally been set at five under and… thank goodness, as -6 has tried to get in until the last second. There was no choice but to fly low to be up and, even, to make the cut. These are not the ideal tournament conditions for Jorge Campillo (+1).
The Extremaduran does not feel comfortable in the birdie spiral and has shown it again with two cards that have not given him a chance to fight to play the weekend. It is true that this Friday he started his day well, with three error-free birdies in the first eight holes, but from there the magic disappeared. Three bogeys in the next five holes definitively sealed his fate at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis.
Jorge now returns to Europe, where he feels more comfortable, more natural. He plays Scotland and the Open in Troon, two tournaments that will significantly mark his season.
The tournament, meanwhile, rides on the birdie with an extraordinary tie. Nearly 20 players are separated by only three strokes. In a fist. Tied for the lead are CT Pan (-14) and Aaron Rai (-14). The former finds his raison d’être as a golfer in tournaments where many birdies are made, while the latter is in great form. One stroke behind is Harry Hall (-13) and two behind are, among others, Eric Cole (-12) and the young amateur Luke Clanton (-13), who week after week continues to impress with his solidity and good results. He is proving that he has something special.
