Jorge Campillo (-9) has made a giant leap in the ranking of the Corales Puntacana Championship after signing an excellent card of 67 strokes, five less on the day, at the Corales course of the Puntacana Resort. He has placed himself in the 19th position, four strokes from the top 10 and eight from the lead.
The Spaniard started in the first match of the third day and did not do it in the best way, although he ended up saving the day by sinking a valuable par putt from about four meters. First bell on the greens and it was not going to be the last or the most resounding…
Indeed, the Extremaduran has been superb today with the putter in his hands. On hole 3, for example, he nailed another putt from about four meters, but this time for birdie and to start the machinery. Shortly after, on hole 5, he got into trouble again, but saved the situation by sinking a cigar from about eight meters to save par. On hole 6 another one would fall for birdie from about four meters; and another one on the 12th, from about six meters… He closed the putt clinic with another birdie cigar on hole 18, from about eight meters.
“Since I changed my putter in San Antonio I am much more comfortable. Today I have putted wonderfully, really. I have made many putts from medium and long distance and I only missed one more, on hole 10, which was quite short, to have had a perfect day on the greens”, he pointed out to Ten Golf as soon as he signed his card.
In addition to showing himself as a real killer on the greens, Jorge has also significantly improved his performance with the irons today, an area of the game in which he was much more erratic on Friday and which almost cost him the cut. Another good round from Campillo on his American tour and it is certainly not the first. “I played a very good round at the Valspar, where I was about to sign the best record of the day. I also remember very good rounds in Puerto Rico and Mexico… Today’s was not the best”, he explains. Be that as it may, he has left open the option of signing his best result in the PGA Tour tomorrow, since he obtained the playing rights in this circuit.
The leader with 18 holes to go is still Wesley Bryan (-17), with a one-stroke lead over Kevin Tway (-16), two over Taylor Pendrith and Justin Lower (-16) and three over Billy Horschel (-14). Among them should be the victory this Sunday.
