Jorge Campillo (-5) has made a fantastic debut at the Myrtle Beach Classic of the PGA Tour, a tournament that premieres on the calendar and is held at the The Dunes Golf and Beach Club course in South Carolina.
It has been another very solid day of golf for the player from Extremadura, who has just found out today that he has been named the best sportsman in his region in 2022. He has hit very good irons again, as in the Byron Nelson, and this time the putter has joined the party.
Campillo has tuned the guitar and has made several very good putts between two and three meters, both for birdie and for par. Really, he has hardly let any opportunities slip away, beyond holes 15 and 8, where he missed two birdie chances of two and a half and three meters. It is true that no long putt has fallen, but he has compensated by sinking a sensational approach on his fourth hole of the day, the 13. He had about 40 meters from the left rough. “When I got to the ball I thought this one is going in… It was funny. I hit it as I wanted, it bounced right where I thought and went straight to the hole. I thought it was going a bit fast, but it came out perfect”, explained the man from Cáceres to Ten Golf.
It was a very important turning point in his round. He had started with a birdie on hole 11, but quickly dropped a bogey on the 12th. It was a good bogey, as the ball was left very badly, on the slope towards the lake of this par 3. He could barely move it on the second shot and, however, he connected a magnificent approach on the third and left it just over a meter for par. Then came the eagle and launched his round again. From there, there were no more mistakes and three more birdies.
The course at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club is no piece of cake, although the results of this first day are being low, but as the wind blows, which is expected from tomorrow, it will get complicated. Campillo is two strokes behind the leader Beau Hossler (-7), while David Thompson and Alistair Docherty share second place with six under par. There have also been some messes. The most striking has been that of the Japanese Taiga Semikawa, who last week made the top 10 in the Byron Nelson and today has signed 78 strokes.
