Charlie Woods will play his first US Amateur Junior after passing one of the tournament’s preliminaries held at Eagle Trace Golf Club. The youngest son of Tiger will be part of the game at Oakland Hills in the tournament that takes place in just a month.

A total of 85 players participated and only four got a ticket for the tournament. Well, the youngest of the Woods has been the best of the preliminary and with a card of 71 strokes has certified the pass to his first US Amateur Junior.

The round did not start well for Charlie. A bogey on the first flag and a double bogey on the next one made the pass very complicated. Woods managed to turn it around with five birdies and one more bogey for a total of one under par.

“I didn’t play my first two holes very well, but I played the last 16 holes very well. I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and took advantage of some good birdie opportunities when I had them,” Charlie said as soon as he confirmed his qualification.

He will debut in the tournament a year later than his father and at the same age at which Tiger lifted at Bay Hill the first of his three US Juniors. In the debut year he fell in the semifinals. It should be remembered that in the tournament there are 264 players who will play 36 holes in stroke play format on the North and South fields of Oakland Hills to determine which 64 golfers move on to match play and compete for the coveted trophy.

“The USGA means a lot to me,” Charlie Woods acknowledged. “I want to win USGA championships and I hope to win the US Open someday.” It’s normal for young Charlie to say that since at home he can find nine tournament titles organized by the USGA that his father won, six of them consecutively: three consecutive US Junior Amateurs (1991, 1992, 1993), three consecutive US Amateurs (1994, 1995, 1996) and three US Open (2000, 2002, 2008). Almost nothing.

Mark the dates. The US Junior Amateur will be held from July 22 to 28 at Oakland Hills, Detroit.
