Epic blunder by Mouw at the American Express: 13 strokes from the middle of the fairway!

The Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West is undoubtedly proving to be the most challenging of the three rotating courses that participants in the American Express, the third tournament of the season on the PGA Tour, are facing this week. The results on the leaderboard reflect this. For instance, it highlights what happened during the second round on Friday to the American William Mouw, who went from a mid-table position, with a chance to fight to make the Saturday cut, to being practically out of contention.

It all happened on the par-five 16th hole of the course, a hole that started brilliantly with a fantastic drive from the tee over 300 yards to the centre of the fairway, and then became unexpectedly complicated. All due to the tremendous bunker that guards the green on the left side, with a steep bank several metres high that requires extremely difficult shots. His ball landed there in an attempt to reach the green in two. And that’s where a carousel of errors began, taking him from the bunker to the rough and from the rough back to the bunker repeatedly, in a sequence that seemed endless.

The final result was devastating. He needed 13 strokes to complete a par-five hole. There, he squandered any chance of achieving a good result in the tournament. A terrible mental blow that immediately took its toll, needing six strokes for the par-three 17th, sending a ball into the water. When his round was about to end and he was four under par, in the blink of an eye he found himself five over par, in the third-to-last position on the tournament leaderboard.
