Hayden Springer (-12) joined an exclusive club this Thursday, although increasingly less so. He scored 59 strokes in the first round of the John Deere Classic and, obviously, he is the outstanding leader of the tournament with the entire afternoon shift still ahead. It seems very unlikely (although increasingly less so) that anyone can catch him at the top.
This is the fourteenth round under 60 strokes in the history of the PGA Tour and the forty-second in all professional circuits valid for the world ranking in addition to LIV Golf.
Springer achieved it with a fabulous first nine holes, signing 27 strokes in that first partial, with six birdies and an eagle. His round cooled down at the beginning of the second nine, but a stratospheric finish allowed him to reach that result that is still magical of 59 strokes. He finished with a birdie on the 15th, an eagle on the 17th and a birdie on the 18th after sinking a magnificent putt of about four meters.
In a way, it can be said that 2024 is already a historic year for the PGA Tour in this area. This is the third time since the circuit exists that there are two rounds under 60 in the same season. The previous two were in 2010 and 2017. It should be remembered that Cameron Young also scored 59 two weeks ago at the Travelers Championship.
