Jorge Campillo defines his game this week at the Myrtle Beach Classic with one word, after placing two strokes from the lead, in third position, past 36 holes: solid.
“I’ve hit the irons very well, as I have been doing in recent weeks. I’ve left myself quite a few opportunities. The driver is not perfect, but at least I’m managing to get it in play, well. And the putter, which was weaker last week, is much more solid,” he summarised to journalists after signing the card this Friday.
This is the first time that Campillo will start so high in the ranking in a PGA Tour tournament with two days left, but it is not a strange situation, far from it, for a golfer who has won three times on the DP World Tour. “If I continue on this line I think I will have a chance to win on Sunday. It is not an uncomfortable position for me and I hope to live up to it,” he assures.
Jorge is comfortable on the course, the The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. He has been somewhat surprised by the results, as he expected more demanding scores. “It really is a good course. On practice days it was quite windy and I thought it was going to play harder. But I don’t know, I’m still playing well. Someone is always going to make very low rounds, so I hope it’s me over the weekend. If not, I’ll do my best. But yes, the course is great this week,” he says.
Regarding his adaptation to the PGA Tour, Campillo recalls that his years at the University of Indiana were already a great preparation, although there are some things he is not quite used to. “It’s never easy to adapt to a new place, but maybe a little more for me because I was at university here a long time ago for four and a half years, so it was a little easier. However, I’m still struggling to assimilate the pace of play. Here they play very slow compared to there. But apart from that, everything is fine and I’m happy to have the opportunity to come here to play,” he concludes.
