Jay Monahan, commissioner of the PGA Tour, and Adam Scott, player director of the American circuit’s council, held a meeting last Tuesday with President Donald Trump at the White House, as announced by the Tour this Thursday.
Monahan, Scott, and Tiger Woods have issued a joint statement with some details of the meeting, where it is reported that they discussed the future of professional golf and took the opportunity to ask Trump to get involved in the current situation of world golf to try to reach a solution to the existing fracture at the moment.
“We know that golf fans are eagerly awaiting a resolution to the negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund and we want to thank President Trump for the interest and support he has always shown to golf. We asked the president to get involved in this matter for the good of golf, the country, as well as all the countries involved. We are grateful that his leadership has brought us closer to a final agreement, paving the way for the reunification of men’s professional golf,” the joint statement said.
Before winning the elections last year, Trump said he could reach a deal in about 15 minutes. His course in Florida, Trump Doral, will host a LIV Golf event in April, the week before the Masters, and he has made numerous appearances in LIV Golf pro-ams in recent years. His closeness with the Saudis is more than evident.
The PGA Tour’s talks with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund are ongoing, but there hasn’t been much news of progress towards a resolution, aside from players saying they are getting closer. It is suggested that everything might be blocked by the United States Department of Justice, which is why Trump’s mediation might have been requested.
Justin Thomas, one of the 16 PGA Tour players who are part of the 2025 Player Advisory Council, agreed that the involvement of presidents seems like a good sign. “Yes, I think so. I hope so. Yes, I hope that’s the case,” he said after his first round in Phoenix.
We’ll see what happens in the coming days, but everything points to an imminent announcement of the agreement. Perhaps the LIV tournament at Donald Trump’s course will be used. It will be interesting to see how the timing is managed.
