Collin Morikawa, double major champion, will have a new and illustrious companion on the bag for the The Open Championship taking place next week at Royal Portrush. The American has confirmed to Bunkered that he will be using the services of Billy Foster, one of the most recognised and respected caddies on the circuit.

The news marks a significant move following Morikawa’s recent split with his previous caddie, Joe Greiner, a relationship that ended last month, just before the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. Since then, the Californian has been exploring options to find a stable solution for the future.

Foster, on the other hand, boasts a legendary career. He has worked with names such as Severiano Ballesteros, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Sergio García and more recently Matt Fitzpatrick, with whom he shared six years and a US Open title. Their separation occurred last March, and since then the veteran Yorkshire caddie had remained away from the competitive forefront.

However, the alliance seems to be temporary. Foster, 59, will accompany Morikawa only for the next two weeks: first at the Genesis Scottish Open, and subsequently at the British Open, where Morikawa already knows what it is to win, following his brilliant debut in 2021 at Royal St George’s.

Foster’s experience and knowledge in such tournaments and links courses could become a key factor for a Morikawa looking to rediscover his best form in major events. Although the collaboration is currently planned only for these two weeks, it will be interesting to see if the connection between them leads to a more lasting relationship.
