– When is the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am going to end? It’s the million-dollar question and at this time it has no answer. It could end today Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or, even, it may have already ended. All scenarios are possible, they are foreseen and there is a specific contingency plan for each one.
– The great threat is called the weather forecast. The forecast for today Sunday is very bad on the beautiful Californian coast of Pebble Beach. Wind, a lot, and rain, a lot. Sustained winds of about 60 kilometres per hour are expected and gusts that could reach 90. Not only is it almost unplayable, but it is even dangerous. In addition, water is going to fall and the course is already very wet. It is starting to have very little margin.
– At five o’clock in the morning local time (two in the afternoon on the Spanish mainland), the PGA Tour referees will already be in Pebble Beach to carry out a first inspection. Fifteen minutes later they will send the first message to the players informing them of the situation: it is played or it is not played.
– If it is played, the fourth round will start at 16.45 (always Spanish time) and everyone will have to cross their fingers very hard to try to get as far as possible.
– If it is not played, there will not be a new update of the situation until 18.30, so the game would not start, at best, until 21.00 hours. If this is the alternative that goes ahead, there would not be time to complete the game today and it would have to end on Monday or Tuesday.
– Whatever happens, today Sunday access to spectators or volunteers is not allowed. The organisers are also warned to dismantle any structure in case of danger.
– The main concern today is the wind. If it blows as the radar says, it will not be possible to play. The longer-term concern is water. If it keeps raining, the course will be unplayable.
– Final on Monday? In case the game starts today and cannot be completed, every effort will be made to finish tomorrow. And if necessary it could even end on Tuesday, but only in the case that on Monday more than half of the players have finished their round. Otherwise, 54 holes.
– Final on Tuesday? Only if it starts on Sunday and more than half of the players have finished on Monday. If it is not played today and the fourth round starts on Monday, it will be because there is certainty of finishing the same Monday. A round that started on Monday cannot end on Tuesday. These are the rules of the PGA Tour. For the day to start and end on Monday, the deadline to start is 19.15.
– The big problem on Monday is the rain. “The course must be in appropriate conditions for a great championship. It cannot be so wet that balls can be lost in the street, stuck, or in the rough. This can happen with the panorama offered by the forecast. If the course does not meet the necessary conditions, it will not be played”, warns chief referee Gary Young.
Live results of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am
– Wyndham Clark handed in the 60-stroke round number 54 in the history of the PGA Tour on Saturday. It is the fourth time he has led a tournament before the start of the final round. The previous two he won: Wells Fargo and US Open. Almost nothing. If Clark wins, it would be his third victory in the last 16 tournaments played.
– Ludvig Aberg is playing this week for the first time since he turned professional at Pebble Beach. So far, he has 36 holes and has not yet made a bogey. Granite.
– Matthieu Pavon is the player with the most birdies this week (22). “I can’t answer that question, I really don’t know. The only reality is that I am playing better and better since I won the Open de España. I suppose it will be confidence”, the Frenchman explained to the question of why he is now performing at this high level.
– Mark Hubbard is looking for his first victory on the PGA Tour in 205 tournaments. In a way, this Sunday, he is the ‘ugly duckling’ of the classification.
– Jason Day, Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler are the men to watch from those coming from behind. Surely, no one is more eager than them to be able to play the last 18 holes today.
