Although he started in a good sixth position in the FedEx Cup before playing the TOUR Championship, Rory McIlroy had to settle for a tied ninth place at the end to close the playoffs of the PGA Tour. A tournament that, however, does not put an end to his season, as the Northern Irishman plans to play several more events in Europe by the end of the year. An intense schedule that, as he explained in his press conference last night, he will drastically cut back in 2025…
“My season is not over. I still have five events to play. But yes… I feel like they have been very intense tournaments, also with the Olympic Games, so everything was a bit condensed”, he began. “I think it was a great season, but very long, I’m going to have to think about finding some extra breaks here and there next year and from then on. After the US Open it felt like I had hit a wall and I’m still a bit like that”, he detailed.
McIlroy will end the year, barring any setbacks, with 27 tournaments played. A fairly high number that he is going to significantly reduce: “When I was 20 I didn’t have the responsibilities I have now. I’m going to try to reduce it to 18 to 20 tournaments a year in the future, I think”. And although it is true that his current life is different from a few years ago, it is also true that his effort to support the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour during the ‘dispute’ with LIV Golf seems to have lost sense with recent events…
Especially those famous ongoing negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia in which the Northern Irishman does not believe he has any outstanding issues with the transaction committee at this time: “The lawyers have been talking a lot and I think just the complexity of this deal from a legal point of view means that we have nothing to add in that sense, it doesn’t make sense for us to be in those negotiations”. In short, Rory will be more selective from 2025… waiting for future events.
