Scheffler beats McIlroy to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award

The PGA Tour announced two of its most valuable distinctions this Monday: Player and Rookie of the Year. The voting was conducted among members of the American circuit who have played a minimum of 15 tournaments. The poll remained open between 4 and 12 December. The winners were Scottie Scheffler and Aldrich Potgieter.

At first glance, it could be said that the predictions were met, although in reality the battle between Scheffler and Rory McIlroy was quite intriguing. It’s true that Scottie has won six times this year and two Majors, which is significant, but Rory wasn’t far behind, with three victories, admittedly half, but what three victories: Masters, THE PLAYERS, and AT&T Pebble Beach. Of course, it should be added that the triumph in Augusta marked the achievement of the Career Grand Slam, something only five players in history had done before him. In short, it was a tough competition.

Finally, Scheffler prevailed for the fourth consecutive year. He is the second player in PGA Tour history to receive this award four years in a row or more. The record is held by none other than Tiger Woods with five uninterrupted Player of the Year recognitions, between 1999 and 2003. That means Scheffler could match Tiger in 2025 if he wins the award once more. As if the young man needed extra motivation for next year.

In addition to Scheffler and McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, FedEx Cup champion, and Ben Griffin, undoubtedly the breakout player of 2025, were also nominated for the award.

On the other hand, the Rookie of the Year award was much clearer, mainly because Aldrich Potgieter was the only rookie to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs and also secured his first victory by winning the Rocket Classic. The 21-year-old South African triumphed over Michael Brenann, Steven Fisk, William Mouw, and Karl Vilips.
