Scottie Scheffler has withdrawn from this week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open, and the reason has been something of a surprise.
This Tuesday it was expected that the golfer would arrive at Memorial Park, but he will not. At first the PGA Tour did not offer an explanation for his absence, which caused some surprise. A few minutes later, Golf Channel confirmed it is not due to any injury, but to the imminent birth of the second child of the World No. 1. Scheffler had not announced Meredith‘s pregnancy, which is why at first it was thought the reason might be an injury.
The happy news comes with the Masters just around the corner, as the first major of the year starts in two weeks. Scheffler, winner of two green jackets, has just posted a T22 at The Players. From a purely sporting point of view the Texan arrived in need of sharpening his game before reaching Magnolia Lane after the recent weeks of competition, although we all know how Scottie plays and, without doubt, he is one of the leading favourites (if not the top favourite) to win at Augusta.
Scheffler and his wife, Meredith, welcomed their first child, Bennett, on 8 May 2024, just a few weeks after the Texan’s second victory at the Masters and a few days before the PGA Championship de 2024. That year he also won the RBC Heritage the week after Augusta and did not miss any of the tournaments he had planned to play.
Matt Kuchar now takes his place in the field at Memorial Park, while Justin Lower becomes the first reserve.
