The 4,120th golfer in the world secures the PGA Tour card

All stories from a school like the PGA Tour are good. Even more so when this fascinating golf tournament had not been held for eleven years. However, there is one that shines brighter than the rest. It’s the one of Blaine Hale Jr., a 26-year-old golfer who arrived this week in 4,120th place in the world ranking and leaves with the full PGA Tour card for 2024. Wonderful.

The PGA Tour School Final had not been played since 2012. It has been played over four days on the Dye’s Valley course at TPC Sawgrass and on the East-West course at Sawgrass Country Club, in Florida, at the PGA Tour headquarters. 165 players participated and only five got the card. A tough selection process. Needless to say, only the strongest have survived.

The chosen ones are Australian Harrison Endycott, Mexican Raúl Pereda and Americans Trace Crowe, Hayden Springer and Blaine Hale Jr. It’s worth stopping to look at the latter’s story. He has never played a PGA Tour tournament, he has barely played one on the Korn Ferry Tour in his career and he made a living playing on the mini tours and competing in the Monday preliminaries… without success. Now, suddenly, he gets the full PGA Tour card. The American dream made flesh.

Endycott has easily won the School Final. He was one of the least pressured because he had already earned a status conditions on the PGA Tour by finishing just outside the top 125. Even so, his life changes radically. Now he will be able to play about 30 tournaments, while with his previous category he only had fifteen guaranteed. Night and day.

Springer accesses the PGA Tour in one leap. He has moved from the PGA Tour Canada, where he was the Number One in the ranking, to the first division without going through the Korn Ferry Tour. He is 26 years old and has only played four PGA Tour tournaments. His daughter, just three years old, died a month ago from a rare disease.

Crowe comes from the Korn Ferry Tour. He doesn’t have much experience on the PGA Tour either. He has only played three tournaments in his career, something similar to Raúl Pereda, who remains as the only Mexican after the departures of Abraham Ancer or Carlos Ortiz to LIV Golf. Pereda had only played one tournament on the PGA Tour, it was this year’s Mexico Open and he started in the top positions with a round of 65 strokes on Thursday. “Since I tried it I wanted nothing else but this, to have the PGA Tour card,” he confessed excitedly at the end of the tournament.

The School Final ended this Monday because the game had to be suspended due to bad weather all Sunday.
