– Thunderstorm in Greensboro. Play was suspended shortly before five in the afternoon and did not resume. The second round of the Wyndham Championship could not be completed. Tough times for those who are playing for so much in this last stop of the regular season of the PGA Tour. Especially for those who are on edge. Those who are on the brink. Those who might either miss the cut or make it and secure an extra life.
– This is the case for the Hojgaard twins, Nicolai and Rasmus. Both have managed to finish the second round. They are at a total of -3 after shooting 65 and 70, respectively. Right now, the score of -3 is in 65th place. The cut is made by the top 65 and ties. If just one of those at -3 moves to -4, it leaves everyone else out of play. The longest night for the Danish brothers. Missing the cut means being out of the Playoffs (both are outside the top 70 and would need to add something to have any hope) and, in turn, complicates their desire to be in the Ryder Cup. There’s nothing left but to cross their fingers and stay glued to the online leaderboard. Refresh, refresh, and refresh…
– They are not the only ones, of course. Erik Van Rooyen started the week in 64th place in the FedEx and is currently 68th in the projected standings after withdrawing from the tournament in the second round due to back problems. He is another who will be short of saints to pray to in order to stay within the top 70. These are the ones who at least have some hope. Already out of everything are Taylor Moore, Hadwin, Rozner, Norgaard, Smalley, Snedeker, Lawrence, Kisner, Zach Johnson, or Camilo Villegas.
– At the same time, Max Homa is in a tough spot, two to three strokes off the cut with five holes to go, as are Ben An or Tom Kim, who are five to six strokes off with five holes remaining. The Korean is about to certify a failed season. Just like Nick Dunlap, who is a world away from the 70th spot that makes the Playoffs.
– A long night and a tough day await Emiliano Grillo (-3) this Saturday as well. The advantage for the Argentine, and it’s not a small one, is that he depends on himself. He has six holes left and is right at the score that currently marks the cut. He will play for it this Saturday. In the projected standings, he is in 69th place. The same goes for Matti Schmid (-3). He has four holes left and is projected to drop from the 70th place he reached the tournament in.
– In much sweeter territory is Cameron Young (-14), the tournament leader on his own with three holes still to play to complete his second round. He has a one-stroke lead over Aaron Rai (-13), who still has five holes to play, and two over Mac Meissner (-12), who is leading with his scorecard safely submitted in the clubhouse, and Sungaje Im (-12), also with his round completed.
– Another who will have to endure this Saturday is Adam Scott (-4). He has just a one-stroke advantage over the cut and still has four holes to play. Things haven’t gone well for him today. It could be said that the break didn’t do him any harm.
