– As is well known, Tommy Fleetwood will be seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour today at the Travelers, starting as the leader in the final round with a three-shot advantage.
– The Englishman, aged 34, has been successfully and comfortably defending his playing rights on the world’s most important circuit since 2018. In fact, in four of the seven full seasons he has already played, he reached the final of the FedEx Cup playoffs, where only the top thirty qualify. And this year, 2025, he is on track to do the same, as today, before knowing the outcome of this Travelers, he is in 16th place in the FedEx Cup (if he wins today, he could reach seventh position). He is a results machine. Good results, that is. He doesn’t ‘need’ to win.
– Pay close attention to this fact. Fleetwood is ranked 66th in the historical Career Earnings of the PGA Tour, and that’s without having won yet. The 65 players ahead of him in this ranking, ALL OF THEM, have won more than one PGA Tour tournament. Sungjae Im, who is in 50th place, has won the least with two victories. It’s not just that they have celebrated victory at least twice, but 36 of those 65 players preceding the Englishman have won at least one Major…
– There’s even more: in the top 100 of this Career Earnings of the PGA Tour, there isn’t a single player who hasn’t won at least once on this circuit. You have to go down to 115th place to find the Korean Byeong Hun An, who also hasn’t yet opened his winning account. Again: Tommy doesn’t need to win to stand out. Anyway, if he wins today, he will make a significant leap in this ranking (he could comfortably end the year within the top 50 of the Career Earnings), but he would still be the player with the fewest victories within the top 100. He doesn’t need to win to achieve impressive numbers and records.
– It is on the DP World Tour where Tommy has established himself as a winner, with seven victories to his name. However, if we look again at the Career Money List ranking of this circuit, we realise once more that Fleetwood doesn’t need to win to be at the top. He currently occupies the fifth position in this ranking, only behind Rory, who has won 19 times, Westwood (25), Rose (11), and Sergio García (16). In fact, you have to go down to 15th place to find someone who has won less than the Englishman (Shane Lowry, six victories).
– Fleetwood referred yesterday in some way to this peculiar situation and even did so with a touch of humour. “I’m leading many statistics of people who have never won on the PGA Tour, so being number one in something is always great (laughs). Yes, of course, I would love to win on the PGA Tour. This year I’ve given myself a chance in the final stretch a couple of times, but I haven’t been in contention. So this is my first real opportunity. It’s easy to put pressure on yourself, and the longer something like this goes on, the more it’s talked about, of course. But there are also things I’m very proud of, like my consistency, my position in the FedExCup, and the World Ranking… So there are many reasons to be happy, but, you know, of course, I’m not going to be silly and say I don’t care, of course, I want to win, and I hope it happens sooner rather than later.”
– Consistency in excellence, of course, is the key. Fleetwood is always there, even if it doesn’t always seem like it. He is capable of achieving remarkable performance over more weeks than the vast majority. This is, to date, his great virtue, but he is still at a point in his career where he seems capable of making the leap to a higher dimension. Today, in this sense, could draw a line in the sand.
