The unexpected death of Grayson Murray just a few hours after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge, at the Colonial Country Club, shocked the PGA Tour and the entire golf world yesterday. It was Jay Monahan, commissioner of the circuit, who informed of what happened through a note and confirmed that the tournament would continue at the express request of the player’s parents. However, he did not determine the causes of the death of the winner of the Sony Open last January and Number 58 in the world ranking.

Today, the American circuit has shared an emotional letter from Grayson‘s parents in which they confirm that the player committed suicide. Below we reproduce in full the message from the Murray family.

STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF ERIC AND TERRY MURRAY

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son has died. It is surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.

We have so many unanswered questions… But one of them: Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, by his brother Cameron, by his sister Erica, by his entire family, by his friends, by his fellow players and, apparently, by many of you reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

We want to thank the PGA Tour and the entire golf world for the support received. Life was not always easy for Grayson. And although he took his own life, we know that he is now at peace.

Please respect our privacy as we overcome this incredible tragedy and honour Grayson by being kind to others. If that becomes his legacy, we could not ask for anything more. Thank you”.
