Billy Horschel (-23) has taken the victory in the Corales Puntacana Championship after signing off a majestic round of golf on the last day of the tournament. The veteran golfer from Florida, 37 years old, has handed in a card of 63 strokes and has been tearing off stickers from his rivals until he placed himself in the first position. Simply unappealable. Seven birdies, one eagle and no mistakes for a total of nine under par.
Such was Horschel’s exhibition that, having started the day three strokes behind Wesley Bryan (-21), leader after the first three rounds, he ended up winning the tournament with a two-stroke margin. And that’s even though Bryan was no disaster. He signed a result of 68 strokes, a performance that would have served to beat anyone but the enlightened one of the moment. You can’t blame him too much.
Horschel thus definitely comes out of the dark tunnel he had gotten into since 2023 and which had even taken him out of the designated tournaments and the Masters of Augusta. A golfer who had once been the eleventh best in the world and who was now wandering around the 84th place. That’s golf on the PGA Tour. You add good results and wins and you’re up. You start missing cuts and you disappear.
This is his third resurrection. Expert in comebacks. He won early in his career, with three victories between 2013 and 2014. From there, drought until 2017. Again, two victories in two years and again descent into hell until 2021. History repeats itself with two triumphs in 2021 and 2022, the last one at the Memorial Tournament. Once again, two years without showing up on Sundays in the battles to win to come back and win today in the Dominican Republic. His eighth title on the PGA Tour. We already know what’s next. Bet on another Horschel victory in less than a year.
Jorge Campillo achieves his best classification on the PGA Tour
The Corales Puntacana Championship has also given us the best result of Jorge Campillo on the PGA Tour in his entire career. He finished this Sunday with a card of 69 strokes for a total of -12, 18th place. Thus surpassing the 19th position achieved at the Mexico Open in February, which until today was his best record on the American circuit.
Campillo said goodbye to Punta Cana with his best day of golf from tee to green. In fact, if the putter had accompanied him a little more, he would not have been so far from Horschel’s round. He started with three birdies in the first six holes and that’s even though he let a clear option escape on the 5th. On holes 10, 11 and 12 he had puttable mid-distance putts and none went in and he missed more opportunities on 13 (one meter and twenty centimeters), 14 (three meters), 15 (bogey tripping from eight meters) and 17 (from about six meters). At least, he took away the bad taste with a great birdie on the 18th from four meters.
This top 20 allows Jorge to climb some positions in the FedEX Cup, although he still has a lot of work ahead to save the card. He has placed himself in the 139th position. The first 125 are kept.
