Bad weather takes centre stage for the second consecutive week at the PGA Tour. The first round of the WM Phoenix Open was suspended for the first time just before half past eight in the evening, Spanish peninsular time, due to bad weather. It started to rain heavily and the TPC Scottsdale became unplayable. Only about 15 players had time to finish their round.

Sahith Theegala (-5) is the first leader after 14 holes played. He has basically massacred the Arizona greens, sinking putts of all colours. In fact, he got to six under par, although he made a bogey just before the suspension.

One stroke behind Theegala are Shane Lowry (-4) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (-4), two players who have already shown they can handle bad conditions, both rain and wind, which has also blown at the start of this tournament. Lowry even seems to enjoy it when the environment becomes epic, while Fitzpatrick’s controlled golf is ideal in these conditions. Also tied for second place is Korean S.H. Kim (-4).

Another of the skilled sufferers on the American circuit is Jordan Spieth (-3). There is nothing that scares the Texan. He has managed to survive by saving some pars that only seem within his reach and getting birdies from positions that for any mortal are synonymous with bogey or double bogey.

The clubhouse lead is two under par and is shared by David Thompson, Alex Noren, Joel Dahmen, Kevin Yu and Martin Laird.

Among those who have suffered the most with this troubled start are Gary Woodland, Aaron Rai, Matti Schmid, Matt Kuchar, Max Homa or Robert MacIntyre.

The suspension does not look very good. What is clear is that the first round will not be completed today, so the tournament will already be stumbling at least until the cut is made and some ground can be recovered.
