This Sunday there are going to be guys who have to play something like forty holes of golf to finish the Wyndham Championship. Jorge Campillo (-5) should be one of them, although he still has to confirm his presence in the marathon final day in which the last two rounds will be played in full. The Extremaduran has to finish tomorrow, very early, the three holes he has left to finish the second round and stay within the cut line, which is at -4. Things look good for the Spaniard, who came with a partial of three less on the day and who at the time of the suspension due to lack of light was on the green of hole 15, par 5, with an eagle option of about fifteen meters, although it is certainly a delicate putt, all downhill. This Saturday he has played quite well again, hitting solid from the tee. A pity that putt of just over a meter that he missed on hole 9 to save par.
This Sunday, after throwing that eagle putt, he would have to face the last three holes, in which, let’s think the best, he could even get closer to the hot zone of the table. All this will happen from 6.45, local time.
The leader is the tireless Matt Kuchar (-12), who needed to win this week to get into the Fedex play off and there he is, laying the foundations of the feat. But the top ten of the tournament, for example, is now at a -8 record, still within reach of Campillo if he finishes the second round in the best way, much more with two full rounds of golf to play.
It could be an epic Sunday at the Sedgefield Country Club, with so much at stake for some players and with so much left to play. It is really impossible to get an idea of who the final winner might be. Some things we are already clear about. For example, that Lucas Glover (+1) will not repeat last year’s feat, when he won this tournament and got into the play off, before winning the first one. And that Jordan Spieth (-2) is also not going to improve his 63rd place in the ranking, although he does not seem to be able to get out of those first seventy who qualify for the first play off.
Campillo, as was already explained in the tournament preview, does not have to do many calculations: like so many others present at the event, he needs to win to get among those first seventy, but anything that reaches the top 125 would be good news. In the end, the truth is, there are many who start with heroic aspirations at the Wyndham, but very few who really manage to move in the ranking. It’s a mathematical issue, a no-brainer. Winner, for example, there can only be one, and there are dozens who need to win to reach the coveted top 70…
The plan of the PGA Tour is still to finish the tournament on the same Sunday, although it is certainly going to be against the clock, because as we know in this circuit, not even in such particular situations as the one we are dealing with this week, with so much delay due to the Debby storm, are the players able to get their act together and speed up. It is possible (let’s be optimistic) that tomorrow they will all come out with the commitment to slightly speed up certain routines, although it will cost Campillo little or nothing… If they left him to his own devices this guy would play the 39 holes in less than seven hours. Bets are accepted.
