The Plantation Course at Kapalua is hosting an exciting first tournament of the year on the PGA Tour this week. The famous The Sentry brings together in Hawaii the winners of last season’s American circuit events and the FedEx Fall events, a meeting whose main attraction, besides becoming the first winner of 2024 and obtaining the usual awards in terms of points and exemptions, is its substantial prize pool.
This season, The Sentry distributes no less than 20 million dollars among its participants, with a cheque that rises to 3.6 million dollars for the winner. The runner-up, if he holds the position alone, will take home a cash reward of 2.16 million dollars. While the golfer who completes the tournament podium, under the same conditions, will receive a prize of no less than 1.36 ‘kilos’.
With 59 golfers on the field and no cut, everyone is guaranteed a cheque when they finish their participation, depending on the final position they occupy. The last classified will take home 50,000 dollars, a figure that clearly shows the economic power of this tournament with which the PGA Tour kicks off an exciting new season, with its change of format in the calendar and its increase in prizes for its players.
The winner of this event in its 2023 edition was the Spaniard Jon Rahm. However, as is logical, he is not in Hawaii this week defending his title after his signing for LIV Golf was made official, which closes the doors of the PGA Tour… at least for now.
